Review: Kingdom Hearts 3

I’ve been of two minds about finally doing a KH3 review. I finished the main story a few weeks ago and had mixed feelings about it. As time passed, my feelings ebbed and flowed like a river of Heartless. Sometimes reflection is needed after a game before final opinions come into focus.

So now I think I’m comfortable with my final thoughts on the game. I already talked about how I was disappointed with how the Disney worlds played out in an earlier post, so I’m not gonna harp too much on those themes again (but they will probably still come up). I’ll also try to avoid any specific story spoilers, but there will be general spoilers of what happens all the way up to the endgame.

Now let’s get into it.

Episode 23 – Handsome Ansem (A Kingdom Hearts Retrospective)

This week’s episode of Make Me A Gamer is an almost-laser-focused discussion! We start off with a quick food hypothetical posed by HarveyZ, followed by a short spoiler-full discussion of the new Netflix movie Velvet Buzzsaw (this discussion takes place from 10:30 to 21:26 if you wish to avoid spoilers about the movie). After that, it’s all aboard the Kingdom Hearts train as TMan tries to explain the whole plot of the entire series (not including Kingdom Hearts 3) to HarveyZ, a person who really knows absolutely nothing about the game. And while TMan is no expert himself, he does his best. We hope you enjoy, and we apologize for the lack of episode last week! We hope this was worth the wait! (This episode was recorded February 7, 2019.)

Kingdom Hearts 3 & Disney’s Controlling Hand

I’ve been playing Kingdom Hearts 3 and it’s been an up and down journey. While on the one hand I’m enjoying the moment to moment gameplay and there have been some genuinely great scenes and events, there’s also been something missing from a lot of the worlds so far.

Kingdom Hearts as a series is ostensibly about being able to interact with the Disney worlds and characters you love. It’s what attracted hordes of children and teenagers to the series when it debuted in the early 2000s. There was something magical about getting to explore Agrabah with Aladdin and swim through the ocean with Ariel.

But some of that magic is missing in KH3. Perhaps it’s because the Disney of 2019 is different from the Disney of 2002, but there is a corporate oppression lurking in the shadows of KH3’s overall design. I just completed Arendelle, the world based on Disney’s Frozen, and it was by far the worst and most glaringly obvious showing of Disney’s influence on the game. And considering I’m a person who hasn’t seen Frozen but was still frustrated with the world…well, that’s saying something.

Spoilers for KH3 Disney worlds and their plots will follow – no spoilers for any overarching KH plots will be in this article.
